Manhood On The Mind

Well, now that everyone has returned for the new semester, and the routines of life are regaining their pre-Christmas patterns, I thought that I would send some articles your way that have appeared in the realm of blogdom since early December. As a side note, I will try to begin each week with a “Manhood on the Mind” post so you can keep up with what is being written by other Christian leaders.
"Nothing Can Unsex Me If I Don’t Let It" from Kevin DeYoung
I have learned to look forward to Kevin DeYoung’s blog entries because they are unpredictable, authentic, and well-written. In this particular entry, he shares a story from a First Things article in which a wife and mother is coming to grips with her femaleness while her husband struggles through joblessness and being the homemaker for the family. Here is yet another practical example of the reality of our hardwiring as men and women to be more than what society is trying to make us.
"Ten Motives for Fathers from a Faithful Pastor" by Jeff Robinson
Jeff Robinson, a contributor for the The Council on Biblical Manhood & Womanhood has edited and offered words of advice from the Puritan pastor, Richard Baxter concerning fatherhood and families. While most of the readers of this blog are not yet fathers (or husbands for that matter), this article could still offer a compelling argument for the value of families and active fathers. Your training for husbandry and fatherhood should begin before you are a husband or father, so take five minutes to think through the implications shared by Pastor Baxter. He is right on!
"The Manliness of Adoption: Testosterone and Pure Religion" by David E. Prince
This article is actually a Father’s Day sermon that was posted by David E. Prince this month on Reformation 21. Though you might consider it lengthy, it is worth a read and a re-read.
"The Problem of Evangelical Biblical Illiteracy: A View from the Classroom" by David R. Nienhuis
We should never assume that our familiarity with Scripture somehow equals a mastery of God’s Word. Quoting Scripture without understanding its contextual message is of no value to us as men, and if we are going to be men of God’s Word, we should allow Nienhuis’ article to serve as a prod to truly learn from Scripture.
"Recommended Books for a Pastor in His 20’s" by Randy Alcorn
I have a high level of respect for Randy Alcorn because he is a man who has suffered joyfully for following and proclaiming the teachings of Jesus. When he makes a recommendation, I listen. I’m 29, so I guess this article is as much for me as it is for you, but I’m going to have to get busy because my time is running out!
"Remembering Roy" by James MacDonald
Pastor MacDonald shares the story of one the faithful elders in his church who has recently entered the eternal presence of King Jesus. As young men, we need to hear from the lives of the older, faithful saints, and so I decided to add this as an encouragement to you that giving God your entire life is worth it, and as a tribute to a faithful soldier of Christ. May we all be found as faithful if God gives us as many years!
