Manhood on the Mind

by Adam McCune on Feb 22nd, 2010 at 1:58 am

Spring break is one week away for me. I’m looking forward to visiting with my mother, extended family, and my brother’s family. I’m also looking forward to going south where it (hopefully) is warmer and the southern charm is available even for Yankees such as myself. Not every moment will be light and easy. My grandfather, a hero of this country and in my own life, is not faring well, and I am preparing to speak with him for what might very well be the last time. Pray that I can learn one last lesson from him and honor someone to whom honor is due.

Just a thought for us as we embark on another week.

“Did He Get Married Too Young” by Albert Mohler

Dr. Albert Mohler offers an interesting review of David Lapp’s article on marriage and youth. What do you think of the issue?

“How I Almost Quit” by John Piper

We will all undoubtedly face crucial moments in life where we want to quit. John Piper’s honest struggles as a pastor should remind us that no one is immune from these seasons, and that an honest relationship with God will be crucial to navigating these seasons.

“Stop Cleaning the Kitchen and Read a Book” by Susan Wise Bauer

Now, you might think that an article for homeschool mothers concerning how to teach their children may seem like a completely irrelevant article concerning the purpose of this site. However, her advice regarding how to read effectively is worth mining from the article. Yes, there are ways to read well and read poorly. Her guide helps to read more effectively, and that transcends gender, age, and socio-economic status.

“A Peculiar Proposal” by Mark Rogers

Having asked my father-in-law for my wife’s hand in marriage when we were dating, I can relate to the mixture of tension, anxiety, eagerness, fear, and joy that saturates that moment. After reading Adoniram Judson’s request to his eventual father-in-law, I have come to two conclusions:

  • Any man who will be worth his salt as a husband should show such respect to the man who has been charged by God to raise his daughter in the way she should go. An exchange of leadership is taking place, and you dare not take it lightly.
  • This guy had some serious guts.

Just do it.

“Where the Boys Aren’t” & “When Guys Get to Pick & Choose” by Thomas Jeffries

Here are two similar articles concerning the shrinking number of male students in colleges and the potential consequences that this trend can have in our society. Should we be concerned or are there explanations for this trend that do not bode so poorly for men?
