What We Believe
Though our contributors might come from different backgrounds or hold to various doctrinal positions based on their interpretation of Scripture, there are some core beliefs that we do have in common. All contributors profess agreement on these key issues.
God
- We believe that God exists, that there is only one God, and that He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:1, 26; Matthew 28:19; John 1; 2 Corinthians 13.
- God the Son:
- The Son of God is Jesus, who has always existed and came to earth by being conceived of the Holy Spirit in a virgin girl named Mary. He is fully God and He is fully man. Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1; Colossians 2:9; Philippians 2:6-11; Revelation1.
- Jesus came from heaven to earth in order to live a perfect life and be killed on a cross so that the punishment for man’s sins could be substituted from man to Him. After having been dead for three days, He rose physically from the dead and secured forgiveness of sins for His believers as well as proved his ability to lead believers to new life. This forgiveness of sins, therefore, does not occur because of anything we do for ourselves, but is entirely dependent on the work that Jesus did in living, dying, and resurrecting. His saving work for us is complete and sufficient for restoration with God. Romans 3:1; Romans 5:12-21; Corinthians 15; Ephesians 2:1-10; Hebrews 4:14-5:10; Hebrews 9:27-28.
- We believe that Jesus is not dead. Yes, He died, but He is alive because he rose from death to life again, and He is now in Heaven in God the Father’s presence. In the Father’s presence, He is now our High Priest who intercedes on our behalf before the Heavenly Father. He will eventually return to earth and establish His kingdom, in which He will reign forever. Luke 24:26-43; Acts 1:6-11; Hebrews 2; Hebrews 4:14-16;Revelation 1; Revelation 19-22.
The Bible
- We believe that the Bible consists of two testaments (Old and New) containing a total of sixty-six books. The messages contained in these books God’s word to all of humanity. The authors of these books did not write what they wanted to record, but wrote what God wanted them to say through the power of the Holy Spirit. Because the perfect God is delivering the message, the Bible is without error and wholly reliable. Furthermore, it is the chief authority for our life and beliefs. The Bible rules over any other piece of information that we receive. 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21.
Humans
- We believe that humans exist because God desired to create them and not because they were the result of a random and evolutionary abnormality (i.e. mutation) in the fertility cycle of a different species. God created man and woman in a distinct way from the rest of the living beings in that He made them to reflect His image. Because humans all share the image of God, they all have value. That value is equal regardless of a person’s gender, race, or access to money, power, or fame. Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 2:7-17; Genesis 3.
- We believe that the first man, Adam, was made without sin, but his decision to rebel against God’s command resulted in every subsequent human, including Adam, to be subject to physical and spiritual death. Therefore, every human is born with a sin nature and is need of reconciliation with God if spiritual death is to be avoided. The effects of sin on the physical body mean that we will physically die even if we are given spiritual life through Jesus Christ. Genesis 3; Romans 3; Romans 5:12-21; Hebrews 9:27.
- Even though humans cannot rescue themselves from their spiritually dead condition, they can receive new life by believing that Jesus is Lord. This believe will naturally result in living a new life where Jesus’ teachings and commands become the new normal while our old ways of living are left behind us. All believers in Jesus are not expected to work their way into heaven, but He does expect us to grow in our relationship with Him as well as with others. Ephesians 2:1-10; Philippians 2:12-18; Hebrews 5:11-6:20.
The Church
- We believe that God created an institution that we call the church. The church consists of believers in Jesus who gather together to live as a community so that their communities can learn about Jesus as well. In God’s design of the church, believers are each given different types and degrees of giftings from the Holy Spirit that allow them to effectively serve and encourage each other. He also has commanded the church to tell the world about Jesus, both in their local communities and throughout the rest of the world.
- Because God has this special mission for the church, we also believe that every Christian, not just pastors and deacons, has the duty to participate in the process of telling people about Jesus and helping them grow in spiritual maturity. This calling of ministry is to all in addition to the fact that some may be commissioned to lead the group of believers. Matthew 18:15-17; Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-33.
